Uganda is facing a challenge of including children with Special Education Needs (SEN) in mainstream education, especially the deaf because of limited skilled personnel in the field of inclusive education. Kentalis will support Uganda Martyrs University with establishing a Bachelor degree course and a postgraduate course on inclusive secondary deaf education.
These courses will focus on innovative teaching strategies and techniques, which will suit the deaf and hearing impaired learners. The last 5 years Kentalis successfully developed and established a similar degree program in Tanzania. We expect that through this program more deaf and hard-of-hearing children will be able to complete their secondary education. This should lead to a higher employment rate and better career possibilities. The teacher trainees should be better equipped to teach deaf students and will develop skills to support their colleagues without SEN knowledge.
