hEARizon Action Research workshops in Kenya
Besides training teachers for deaf education, Kentalis International Foundation (KIF) trains also professionals in Audiology and Speech and Language therapy in Africa already for many years. This August two workshops will take place in Nairobi.
One of the problems KIF often faces is that these professionals lack suitable test and training materials. Many materials are available in English or other Western languages, sometimes with Western objects and pictures. Almost no materials have been developed in the African languages. Especially for young children materials in their mother tongue are important.
Therefore in August Kentalis organize two one week Action Research workshops in Kenya. Tests will be presented together with adaptation protocols. The participants will be instructed to adapt the materials and after the workshop they will be coached in the development and validation of these materials. The participants will also be provided with a toolkit to do the adaptations.
African researchers will share their experiences in adapting these materials and show results about the implementation.
Two workshops are planned:
- Audiological diagnostics – 6th - 10th of August
- Hearing rehabilitation - 13th till the 17th of August
Participants have been invited from 9 African countries. The workshops will be held at the Kenyan Institute for Curriculum Development (KICD) in Nairobi. The workshop is also open for stakeholders and will cost €800,--.
Besides these programs KIF has also developed training packages for parent support, early childhood education and online and blended audiology programs. In Uganda and Tanzania we currently also are developing a special reading method for Deaf children.
