Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights for Deaf Children

There are around 300.000 deaf children in Uganda. Due to their lack of access to spoken language they miss out a lot of spoken information. Seldomly this information is available in their own language, Sign Language.

Throughout the live of their deaf child the number one fear of parents is sexual abuse. Parents do not know how to inform their deaf children about Sexual and Reproductive Health. Therefore the deaf children are a vulnerable group, for abuse but also to become a victim of HIV/AIDS infections. Together with NAPADEC, which is the National Association of Parents of Deaf Children we will develop training materials, mainly to increase the knowledge and resilience of deaf children in this issue. These trainings aim at parents supporting other parents of deaf children.
